Turning a new leaf

I like that expression, turning a new leaf. There was this friend I had that used to say it a lot. And even if I had not heard it before it wasn't hard to guess what he meant. I just had to imagine a bunch of leaves flying all over the place. I think a lot of people feel that too, the need to change. I know I do. It's more or less always there, something to improve or a new habit to take on. So why not make an illustration out of it? It's been on the back of my mind for a few months now... Until I pulled out of my "just for fun" folder two leaf mandalas done a couple weeks ago for a drawing prompt on symmetry in one of my illustration groups.

Looking at the mandalas I went "Hey, these are leaves... like turning a new leaf!" and then realized this: no matter how much I try there will always be another leaf to turn. You change one thing for a while, then another, and maybe some time later you're back to where you were on that first thing! It's like a mandala of turning leaves, a mash up of the quote and my little leaf mandalas. And that's the illustration it turned into just below.

Each time we turn a new leaf it's only a small part of the big picture. Since there will always be more leaves to turn, more changes to make, then the choice maybe is between to know that and enjoy the foliage or just constantly run after the next change. Personally I prefer the first option.

Head over to my shop if this speaks to you, it comes as a print in several sizes!
